Bills vs. Rams Preview: The Super Bowl Favourites Meet Monday Night

The top two teams on the Super Bowl futures board meet Monday night at SoFi Stadium — the story of the matchup, the numbers, and what it can tell us.

The matchup

The two teams at the top of FanDuel’s Super Bowl futures board will meet under the lights Monday night.

As of October 10, the Los Angeles Rams were the favourites to win Super Bowl LXI at +650. The Buffalo Bills were next at +750.

That means a $100 Rams futures bet would make a $650 profit if Los Angeles won the Super Bowl. The same amount on Buffalo would make a $750 profit. Your original $100 stake would also be returned.

Those prices will move throughout the season, and other sportsbooks may have different numbers. But they show how highly the two teams are rated despite their different starts.

Buffalo arrives at 3-1. Los Angeles is 2-2.

They meet Monday, October 12, at SoFi Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN and ABC, with the ManningCast on ESPN2.

The last meeting between these teams ended 44-42.

There are plenty of reasons to expect another entertaining night.

Buffalo has the NFL’s highest-scoring offence

The Bills have scored 127 points through four games, an NFL-best average of 31.8 per game.

Josh Allen has passed for 1,039 yards and six touchdowns. He has also scored seven times on the ground.

James Cook has added 421 rushing yards, averaging six yards per carry. Tight end Dalton Kincaid leads the team with 270 receiving yards.

Buffalo can score with long drives, deep passes or Allen creating something after a play breaks down. That variety makes the Bills difficult to defend because stopping one part of the offence does not necessarily stop the rest.

Monday will also show how Buffalo responds to its first loss of the season.

The Bills were 6.5-point favourites at home against New England last week but lost 29-26. Allen completed 23 of 33 passes for 253 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

It was not a terrible performance. It was a game Buffalo was expected to win and did not finish.

Buffalo’s defence remains the concern

While the Bills lead the NFL in scoring, they are allowing 26.8 points per game.

The injury situation could make that more difficult against Los Angeles.

Receiver D.J. Moore, defensive tackle Ed Oliver and cornerback Dee Alford did not practise Thursday or Friday. Cornerback Christian Benford participated on a limited basis and appeared to be moving closer to a return.

Buffalo still had another practice scheduled for Saturday, so those were not final game designations.

Moore’s availability matters because he gives Allen an experienced downfield option. Oliver’s status may be even more important against the Rams because Buffalo needs pressure without sending extra defenders and leaving its secondary exposed.

The final injury report should provide a clearer answer before kickoff.

The Rams are better than their record

Los Angeles has alternated wins and losses through four games.

The 2-2 record is ordinary. The underlying talent is not.

Matthew Stafford has passed for 1,189 yards, the second-highest team passing total in the NFL. Davante Adams has 390 receiving yards, while Puka Nacua returned from injury last week and immediately became a major part of the offence again.

The Rams showed their best side in Philadelphia.

Los Angeles trailed the Eagles 20-10 at halftime before coming back to win 24-20. The defence made a fourth-down stop near its own goal line, and the offence responded with the drive that put the Rams ahead.

It was the type of road win that can change the direction of a season.

There is still a concern beneath the passing numbers: Stafford has thrown six touchdowns and six interceptions.

The Rams move the ball extremely well, but turnovers have prevented that yardage from becoming as many points as it should.

Against Buffalo, protecting the football may matter more than producing another impressive passing total.

Will Aaron Donald return?

Aaron Donald missed the Philadelphia game because of back soreness.

Sean McVay said earlier in the week that the Rams hoped Donald would return Monday, but that was not a guarantee. His final status still needed to be confirmed.

Donald changes the matchup if he plays.

Interior pressure is especially important against Allen. It reduces the room in front of the quarterback and makes it harder for him to escape the pocket, extend a play or turn a broken pass attempt into a long run.

Without Donald, the Rams would need players such as Byron Young and Kobie Turner to create pressure.

Los Angeles has still played strong defence without all of its best-known names. The Rams have allowed only 4.0 yards per play through four games.

That defence gives them a possible answer to Buffalo’s league-leading offence.

The last meeting produced 86 points

Buffalo visited Los Angeles in December 2024 and lost 44-42.

Allen passed for 342 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 82 yards and three more scores, becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to record three passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns in the same regular-season game.

It still was not enough.

That game is part of the reason Monday’s total is so high. The current number also reflects what both offences have shown this season.

FanDuel opened the total at 53.5 points. By October 10, it had moved to 54.5.

That does not mean the sportsbook is predicting an exact final score. It means bettors can choose whether the teams will combine for more or fewer than 54.5 points.

A 31-24 result would produce 55 total points and finish over the number. A 27-24 result would produce 51 and finish under it.

Three matchups that could decide the game

The Rams’ receivers against Buffalo’s secondary

Adams is a difficult matchup even for a healthy secondary. Nacua’s return gives Stafford two receivers who can win in different ways.

Buffalo’s cornerback injuries may affect how aggressively the defence can cover them. If the Bills have to provide additional safety help, Los Angeles could find more room underneath for its tight ends and running backs.

Josh Allen against the Rams’ pass rush

Allen is most dangerous when the first play fails.

He can avoid pressure, move outside the pocket and force defenders to choose between covering a receiver and stopping him from running.

Donald’s availability will be central to this matchup. Pressure through the middle could limit Allen’s escape routes. A clean pocket could give him enough time to attack Los Angeles downfield.

Matthew Stafford against Buffalo’s pressure

Stafford has produced plenty of yards, but his six interceptions have helped keep the Rams at 2-2.

Buffalo needs to make him uncomfortable without leaving its injured secondary in difficult one-on-one assignments. If Stafford has time, Adams and Nacua can take control of the game. If Buffalo forces hurried decisions, turnover opportunities may follow.

Understanding Monday’s betting line

As of October 10, FanDuel listed the Rams as 3.5-point favourites. The total was 54.5.

Here is what those numbers mean:

  • Rams -3.5: Los Angeles would need to win by at least four points to cover the spread.
  • Bills +3.5: Buffalo could win the game or lose by three points or fewer and still cover.
  • Total 54.5: The over wins if the teams combine for at least 55 points. The under wins if they combine for 54 or fewer.

The Rams originally opened as 2.5-point favourites, so the spread had moved through the important number of three.

Lines can continue changing because of injuries, betting activity and new information. Always check the current price and the specific rules at the sportsbook before placing any wager.

What Monday night can tell us

This game will not decide the Super Bowl in October.

It can still answer some important early-season questions.

Can Buffalo’s offence carry a defence that has allowed nearly 27 points per game? Can the Rams turn their passing yardage into touchdowns without giving the ball away? Can Los Angeles contain Allen if Donald cannot play?

The winner will leave Monday night with one of the season’s most noticeable victories.

The loser will still have time to recover. Buffalo would be 3-2. Los Angeles would be 2-3. Neither result would end a season or settle what happens in January.

But when the top two teams on a Super Bowl futures board meet in prime time, the game becomes an early test of whether the market’s confidence is justified.

Two accomplished quarterbacks. Two dangerous receiving groups. A rematch of an 86-point game.

Monday night should tell us something.

It just will not tell us everything.
